Criminal Justice Zone

Does anyone know what type of criminal justice systems were used in parts of the world pre-colonization?

In other words, the courts and incarceration systems were primarily a European model I beleive, so does anyone know, for example, what was used by Native Americans, Native Africans, Native Hawiians before European colonization?

I have been interested in criminal pyschology and love to study various types of cases from serial killers to petty crimes and have always found it very interesting to see how cases are solved and so on. I am thinking of switching my major to crimanl justice sense this is a great interest of mine and would love to be able to make a career out of it, but I do not want to just become a police or probation officer… Any suggestions?
