If you have a degree in Criminal Justice, how does that help you become a detective or FBI special agent?

I’m getting my degree in Criminal Justice because I want to someday be an detective or FBI special agent. But I heard you have to be a uniformed officer for a certain amount of time. If that’s the case, then why get the degree in Criminal Justice? Why not just go straight to being a uniformed police officer?
